Gemstones & Quality

Yes, 100% of our gemstones are natural and ethically sourced from Sri Lanka. We clearly label any treatments (such as heat treatment, which is standard for sapphires). We do not sell synthetic, lab-created, or simulated gemstones unless explicitly stated.

Every gemstone comes with a certificate of authenticity documenting its natural origin.

Heated sapphires have been heat-treated to enhance their color and clarity. This is a standard, accepted practice in the industry that affects 95% of sapphires on the market.

Unheated sapphires are completely natural with no treatments. They are significantly rarer and more valuable, often commanding 2-5x the price of heated stones of similar quality.

All our product listings clearly state whether a gemstone is heated or unheated.

We use the internationally recognized "4 Cs" system:

  • Color: Hue, saturation, and tone. For sapphires, vivid blue is most valuable.
  • Clarity: Presence of inclusions. Eye-clean stones command premium prices.
  • Cut: Precision, symmetry, and polish quality affecting brilliance.
  • Carat: Weight in carats (1 carat = 0.2 grams).

We work directly with families and communities in Ratnapura, Beruwala, and other gem-rich regions, ensuring ethical mining practices and fair compensation. Each gemstone comes with a certificate of Sri Lankan origin.

Certification & Authenticity

Gemstones over $2,500 typically include GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certification. For stones under this threshold, we provide our own certificate of authenticity signed by our certified gemologists.

You can request GIA certification for any gemstone - costs typically range from $100-500 depending on the stone. Contact us for a quote.

Every certificate includes:

  • Gemstone type and variety
  • Weight in carats
  • Dimensions (length × width × depth)
  • Color grade and description
  • Clarity grade
  • Cut quality assessment
  • Origin (Sri Lanka)
  • Treatment status (heated/unheated)
  • Unique certificate number
  • Date of certification

For GIA certificates, visit GIA Report Check and enter your report number.

For Nova's Gems certificates, contact us with your certificate number and we'll verify it in our database within 24 hours.

We guarantee that every gemstone sold is 100% natural and authentic as described. If any third-party gemological laboratory determines that your gemstone is not natural or has been misrepresented, we will provide a full refund including all costs (purchase price, certification fees, and return shipping).

This guarantee has no time limit and is transferable to future owners.

Returns & Refunds

We offer generous return windows:

  • 30 days: Standard gemstones
  • 60 days: Premium gemstones over $5,000
  • Extended: Holiday purchases (until January 31)

Gemstones must be returned in original condition with all certificates and packaging. See our complete Return Policy.

Simple 5-step process:

  1. Email returns@novasgems.com with your order number
  2. Receive Return Authorization (RA) number within 24 hours
  3. Package the gemstone securely with all documentation
  4. Ship using our prepaid, insured label (for eligible returns)
  5. Receive refund within 2-3 days of our inspection

Once we receive and inspect your return (2-3 business days), refunds are processed immediately:

  • Credit/Debit Card: 5-10 business days
  • PayPal: 3-5 business days
  • Bank Transfer: 7-14 business days
  • Store Credit: Instant (with 10% bonus value)

We pay: If the gemstone is damaged, defective, or not as described
You pay: For standard returns (change of mind)

For our mistake, we provide a prepaid, fully insured shipping label. For standard returns, you're responsible for shipping costs (we recommend fully insured tracked shipping).

We don't offer direct exchanges, but you can:

  1. Return your original gemstone for a full refund
  2. Purchase your preferred gemstone

Contact us if you're exchanging - we'll expedite your refund and reserve your new gemstone while we process your return.

No, you can checkout as a guest. However, creating an account provides benefits:

Three ways to track:

  • Email: Click the tracking link in your shipping confirmation email

Orders can be modified or cancelled within 2 hours of placement. After that, orders enter processing and cannot be changed.
